Humans have a lifecycle like any other being on this planet. We are born, and we die. During this lifetime, we go through a rollercoaster of emotions. At one moment, we are sad, and at another moment, we are happy. But how much of our time do we dedicate to the betterment of society?

Three months ago, my mother passed away. Her death made me reflect on this journey called Life. Until her death, I always thought life was about learning, setting career goals, achieving those goals, having kids, and eventually becoming old.

But when my mom suddenly passed away, my world shattered. I could not believe my strength, my mother, was no more. Every day people would visit my family — dad, brother, and me — to offer condolences.

My mother was an accomplished woman. She had a Ph.D. in Economics and two Master's degrees. She attended international conferences, presented research papers, published five books, and visited 11 countries. She was a well-known and loved Professor.

But here’s the thing; when people visited us, they spent less time speaking about her achievements and talking more about her impact on their lives.

Students told us about her teaching style and how she was a strict but loving professor. Her style of teaching made it easier for them to learn. Students have shared instances where she helped them to get well-paying jobs as fresh graduates.

Her peers shared with us situations where my mom encouraged them to move forward when they wanted to give up. People have told stories about how she was there for them in times of need. On one such evening, I had an epiphany. An aha moment.

The purpose of Life is to Create a Positive Impact on People

I realized that the purpose of life is not to simply earn money and achieve your goals but to create a positive impact on people. Help them grow and realize their potential. Of course! You have to achieve your goals, but at the same time, make sure you are not neglecting the people around you.

We are Defined by Our Humanity

Our religion or names may define us, but our Humanity truly defines us. Years after we have departed this planet, we shall always be remembered for our love and kindness.

Life is unpredictable, and death is inevitable. So, let’s make the most use of our time on earth. Help a friend or a stranger in need while expecting nothing in return. Encourage people and help them realize their potential.

Be a beacon that shines light in the darkness.

Be the personification of Humanity!
